The tutoring project Kite is starting this year is all about using the academic talent of UBC students to make a positive impact on Vancouver’s community. Volunteers from UBC will be trained to be tutors and mentors for high school students in low socioeconomic status areas of Vancouver. We will offer our services to one secondary school and another school’s homework club aiming to start the program in second semester. Volunteers will provide one-on-one help in Math, English and Science 8 and 9. With one hour a week of personal help, we hope to see these students fulfill their potential in otherwise discouraging subjects. Our volunteers will not only be tutors, but role models and mentors for these students. These services are for students who do not have the financial means to access private tutoring. Our mission is to give high school students confidence and extra help to assist them in achieving their goals for the future.

If you’re interested in becoming a tutor please fill out the application form!

The prospective team’s first meeting is Wednesday, October 10 at 5:30 pm in Koerner Library room 169.

If you are reading this and would like to volunteer as a tutor this year, don’t miss it!
